Which one

Battery or generator?

They solve the same problem in opposite ways. Plenty of homes here end up with both — the battery covers the everyday, the generator covers the week-long.

Battery storage

Silent. Instant — you often do not notice the grid dropped. No fuel, no maintenance, and it pays you back daily by dodging peak rates. Runs out eventually unless solar is refilling it.

Best for: outages measured in hours, and lowering the bill every single day.

Standby generator

Runs as long as it has fuel — days, not hours. Handles the whole house including air conditioning. Noisy, needs servicing, and does nothing for you on the days the power stays on.

Best for: long outages, well pumps, medical needs, and anyone who cannot be without power.

Both together

The battery carries the first several hours silently. If the outage runs long, the generator starts and recharges the battery. This is what people in fire-zone areas increasingly ask for.

Best for: the foothills, where a shutoff can last days.

What affects the price

Every home is different. These are the things that actually move the number.

How much backup you want

One battery covers the essentials through an evening. Whole-home through a multi-day outage takes two or more.

Your existing service

Battery work usually needs 200A. If you are on 100A, a panel upgrade is part of the job.

New solar, or adding to existing

Retrofitting storage onto an existing array sometimes means changing the inverter.

Where it mounts

A garage wall is straightforward. Exterior in a fire zone has clearance and rating requirements that add cost.

Backup scope

Whole-home backup needs more transfer equipment than an essentials-only subpanel.

What people ask

Will it run my whole house?

Depends how many batteries and how big your loads are. Most people back up essentials — fridge, internet, lights, well pump — which lasts far longer and costs far less.

Does my solar work during a blackout?

Not on its own. Standard grid-tied solar shuts down in an outage for utility-worker safety. Storage with the right transfer equipment is what changes that.

How long does a battery last in an outage?

On essentials only, typically overnight and well into the next day. Paired with solar it recharges each morning and can carry you indefinitely.

Do I need a panel upgrade too?

Often yes — most batteries want 200A service. We will tell you at the survey, and we do both with one crew rather than sending you elsewhere.
