Four steps — and the order is not the one most people expect.
We call the utility for a meter spot
This is where the job starts — not with a permit, and not with buying anything. We contact the utility to get a meter spot released, and at the same time prepare the paperwork they need: load calculation, single-line diagram and site plan. Same requirement whether it is your house or your building.
We handle itThe spot is released — then we order material
Only once the utility signs off do we buy the gear, set the date and pull the city permit. Doing it in that order is what keeps a job from stalling half-finished with the power off.

Power off for four to eight hours. You will have the window the day before, so you can plan the fridge and the school run around it.

What affects the price
Every job is different. These are the things that actually move the number.
Your existing service
Going from 100A to 200A is routine. Coming off a fuse box or knob-and-tube means more work behind the wall.
Where the panel sits
An exterior wall beside the meter is straightforward. An interior panel on the far side of the house is not.
What you are adding
A battery, an EV charger and solar all draw from the same service. Sizing for all three now is cheaper than doing it twice.
Overhead or underground
Underground service reroutes cost more and take longer to schedule with SCE.
Grounding and bonding
Older homes often need the ground electrode system brought up to current code as part of the work.
Permit and inspection
Included in what we quote. We do not bill it separately after the fact.

- Breakers that trip when the AC and the microwave run together
- A fuse box, or a panel with screw-in fuses
- Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Challenger panels — known fire risks that insurers increasingly refuse to cover

How long is the power off?
Typically four to six hours on a standard residential upgrade. We give you the window the day before so you can plan around it.
Do I really need a permit?
Yes — and you want one. Unpermitted panel work turns up in escrow, and insurers can deny claims on it. It is included in what we quote.
Can you do it without going through SCE?
No. The service disconnect has to be coordinated with the utility. We make that call and schedule it.
Is 200A enough if I add solar and a battery later?
Usually, for a typical home. If you are planning solar plus battery plus EV charging plus a shop, we will talk about 400A now rather than twice.
